Events Leading to Stamford Bridge
King Edward, the Confessor, of England, died leaving no issue and three different people wanted the throne and the power of being king. He was in fact to be the last Anglo-Saxon King of England.
Harold Godwinson set himself as king, stating Edward promised him the throne on his deathbed.
Duke William of Normandy claimed the English throne because Edward had been promising William for years that he would succeed him and he prepared to sail to battle Harold for the throne.
King Harald Sigurdsson III, of Norway, known as Harald Hardrada, meaning Hard Ruler, claimed the throne because Edward had seized the throne from Harthacnut, the Norwegian, and Harthacnut had promised King Magnus of Norway that the English throne would be his and Hardrada was the successor to Magnus.
Hardrada was further persuaded to fight for the English throne by Tostig Godwinson, brother to King Harold Godwinson. Tostig had been ousted as Earl of Northrumbia, and was not reinstated by his brother, Harold. Tostig promised Hardrada the throne if he had his Earldom reinstated. Tostig would also supply armed men and would fight alongside Hardrada.
Hadrada, had been a warrior since he was 15 years old. He travelled and fought from Kiev to the Byzantium Empire. In fact he had been the Commander of the famed and ferocious Byzantine Varangian Guard and fought many victories.
Harald Hadrada took up his standard, the Landwaster, a black raven on a white background, and with his ship, Ormen, the Serpent, along with about 300 other ships and with about 10,000 or 15,000 heavily armed and trained warriors set sail for England.
